Polaroid SX-70
Original style (no tripod mount hold)
Alpha One style (with tripod mount hole)

Please read this page fully before recovering your camera . . .

We support versions of the Polaroid SX-70 that use the original style leather pattern: those without any provision for a tripod, and the later style, with the tripod mount on the bottom. The SX-70 is a simple camera to recover, but the removal of the old covering must be done properly. All of the old leather and glue residue must be removed before applying the new leather.
The proper removal of the old leather and subsequent cleaning are absolutely essential to achieve excellent results! There are at least 3 types of both metal and plastic bodies produced over the life of the SX-70 Series. Your camera may have some or all of the leather attached to thin metal plates. Some SX-70 users discard one or more of the plates. However . . .

The metal plate that is under the smaller leather part on the bottom (About 9.5 X 5.2 cm) should never be removed or you may destroy the camera. The old leather on this part should be pulled off as gently as possible so that this plate is not bent. The best way to do this, is to pull the old leather back upon itself, 180 degrees away, and not, for example, pulled directly up at 90 degrees, which will bend the plate!

If your leather parts are mounted on the metal plates, always peel or scrape the leather off the plates, with the plates remaining on the camera. This will allow for a very smooth appearance, just like a new camera. To take full advantage of the plates, every bit of leather and residue must be removed, so that the plates are gleaming.

We have only sold the SX-70 kits to repair professionals, and this kit is being offered here as such. We can only offer the general observations above, and cannot document the correct procedure to prepare and recover each variant in the SX-70 Series. There are many good resources within the online community of SX-70 users, and we encourage the SX-70 photographer to seek specific advice from those who have successfully done this job before.

We are stocking 2 types of composite leather, pre-cut for the SX-70, that are available for immediate shipment. Above and at left, are the Polished Ebony and Cinnamon composite leather, respectively. These are each close in appearance and feel to the original tan and black SX-70 coverings, and since they also look great on anything, will be available as pre-cut kits for all supported cameras.

Pre-cut kits for the SX-70 are $23 for either color. Since the SX-70 is a new class of supported camera, kits are not yet posted at the online order page . . . but you can order the tan or black kits here. Other materials are available by special order.
